Golden West Surgery Center Employs Healthy Dose of Leasing

WHEN DR. BRUCE FISSETTE needed a second opinion about where to turn to for his expanding surgery center’s financial health and well-being, he was very precise in selecting which finance company to operate with: He chose GCR Capital.

I’m a chiropractor, acupuncturist and radiologist. But the key thing is that I am the president and CFO of the company,” says Dr. Fissette. His company is Golden West Surgery Center in Newport Beach, Calif., where he manages a 6,000 square-foot, two-operating-room full rehabilitation facility, complete with chiropractic, acupuncture, physical therapy, dermatology, x-ray and urgent care.

While Dr. Fissette is all those things, what he is not is a leasing expert. “That’s a world I know nothing about,” he says. “My world is management of a surgery center, and how to take care of the needs of doctors and all of what that entails.”

A HOLISTIC APPROACH

For the financial health and prosperity of his company, Dr. Fissette got plenty of second opinions about whether or not to lease, and via whom he should secure the equipment necessary to provide his doctors with everything they needed.

“We have about 16 different doctors that come through the center to do all kinds of procedures,” he explains, “everything from podiatry to orthopedic surgery; pain specialties, all types of surgery. It takes an awful lot to put it together. Every doctor needs a tower, special trays and equipment. It all gets to the point where a doctor will come in and say, ‘Okay, I’ll bring my cases over there, but I need $250,000 worth of stuff – yesterday. I can’t do anything until I get all that.’”

“Well, that immediately puts us under some serious pressure and we’ve got to be able to work with companies that we can be comfortable with, that can be responsive to all that. GCR Capital is exactly what we needed,” he says.

As a specialist, Dr. Fissette is knowledgeable in ways to rid the body of physical pain. As an executive, he also understands the financial prognosis when faced with the challenge of fulfilling his doctors’ orders.

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

“John Grant and company have been excellent putting everything together for us, for all that’s needed,” he says of GCR Capital. “He’s always been there. He tells us the kind of [leasing] package [we need], and GCR Capital has been excellent in their responses, packaging, lending and loans to us,” says Dr. Fissette.

Relatively new, Golden West Surgery Center really only signed legal documents within the last couple years and has been officially open, by virtue of some of the certifying boards, for about six months, according to Dr. Fissette.

Golden West Surgery Center has been working with GCR Capital through their most recent phase of expansion. “We’ve done quite a few lease programs with GCR Capital for all types of equipment from anesthesiology machines to full gastroenterology towers and anything in between. There’s just quite a bit there,” says Dr. Fissette.

Before GCR Capital, explains Dr. Fissette, “We’d have to scramble through a lot of different arrangements. See, I started [this business] going from one lender to another, trying to create deals for the best interests of the facility. It became very time-consuming. With GCR Capital, I can just give them an idea of what kind of equipment I want. Then, they go out and do the research, put the package together, bring me the best deal and we’re done,” he says. “It’s quite a bit of time-saving for me.”

COMPETENT CARE LEADS TO HEALTHY EXPANSION

“I probably had four or five other companies that I used to work with for financing,” Dr. Fissette says, speaking from hard-won knowledge. “GCR Capital is easy to work with. I feel confident that GCR Capital is capable of handling anything you hand them. They’ll find a way.”

“If there’s something missing or we have to re-package it and take pieces of it here and there, well, they’re just very, very adaptive. They’ll find a way to put a loan package together, that’s my experience.

“I would say, try GCR Capital before you try the rest.” You could certainly get your own second opinion, but as Dr. Fissette says, “Give them the first chance – they won’t leave you wanting for anything financially.”
